Facebook Graph API Alternative: Reading Public Page Data in 2026

Facebook’s Graph API is one of the most restrictive social APIs left on the market. Every useful endpoint is gated behind app review. Review takes weeks. Rejection is common. Approved apps are rate-limited, tokens expire, and the review policies change often enough that an integration you shipped in January may be dead by June.

For anyone building a product that needs to read public Facebook page data — brand monitoring, competitor analysis, lead generation, content aggregation, AI agents that reason about public conversation — the official Graph API is rarely the right answer. This post covers what actually works in 2026, with runnable code, pricing, and a straight comparison.

What the Graph API still gives you for free

Be fair: there are things the Graph API does fine with minimal setup. If you register a Facebook app (free, no review), generate an app access token, and hit the Graph endpoint with a page ID, you can get basic public metadata without an approval process:

The last one — feed — is the catch. Some pages return posts without review, some return empty, and the behaviour changes page to page with no documented rule. If your product needs reliable post data, you are not going to get it from the basic Graph API path.

What the Graph API blocks you from without app review

Everything interesting for a product:

  • Reliable post-level content across all public pages
  • Post-level engagement (reactions, shares, comment counts)
  • Comments on posts, including nested replies
  • Media URLs on most posts
  • Group posts (public or private)
  • Profile data beyond your own user
  • User-generated content discovery
  • Reels, Video, and Stories endpoints

To get any of the above, you submit your app for Meta review. Review takes 2 to 8 weeks. The reviewer frequently rejects applications that look like “data aggregation,” “monitoring,” or “content re-publishing.” If your product pitch is any of those things, budget several rounds of back-and-forth or plan for rejection.

When you should still use the official Graph API

Two honest cases:

  1. You only need Ad Library data. The Ads Archive endpoint (/ads_archive) is genuinely open — no review, no restrictions. If your product is ad transparency research, use it directly.
  2. You are building on behalf of a page you own or manage. A Page access token on a page you administer unlocks most endpoints without going through app review. This is the one case where Meta’s review process is not in the way.

For anything else — reading public data across pages you do not own, aggregating posts, monitoring competitors, feeding social data into an AI agent — an alternative is the right call. The Graph API was not designed for that workload in 2026 and Meta’s review process will tell you so.
